Today I’m getting my iPad Mini!
There’s a bit of history to my excitement. Initially, I used the Apple Store app on my iPhone 5 to preorder my iPad Mini on October 26th at 08:01. I was abroad for work and I was hoping it would be waiting for me once I got home. Last weekend I checked my order and I saw that Apple wouldn’t ship it until November 14th! With the iPad Mini available in the shops starting November 2nd, I called Apple and canceled my order. Our Apple Store in Amsterdam “had plenty of iPad Minis on stock” so my four year old son and I went to get ours.

When we showed up, they were sold out! The two Apple guys at the door told us that we could have a look at the iPad Mini demo units and we did.
My son was excited to see it, grabbed it and said: “Check out those pixels, daddy! That is so lame! We don’t want it”. The two Apple guys were shocked by my son’s remark, but I could only agree with him and we didn’t get our iPad Mini. They were sold out anyway 🙂
So yes, it is true. The iPad Mini has no retina display and even my four year old son’s eyes can see those pixels (as opposed to the iPad 3 and the iPad 4). Is that a problem for you? If not, you should have an iPad Mini. My first though was that I didn’t want to downgrade my experience from the iPad 3 to a non-retina iPad Mini, but then again: I’m not throwing away my iPad 3 and with our NGN iPad Day (Dutch) coming up next Friday, I decided to order one yesterday anyway. I guess somebody needs to test the hell out of it and I’m more than happy to take that responsibility 🙂 It’s still a new device that needs testing and I reckon it could take another six months or so before Apple release their iPad Mini with retina display.
Dae’s tip: If you live in The Netherlands order your iPad Mini by phone or web from iCentre. If you order before 14:00 CET, you’ll get it the next day! That’s way better than driving up & down to Amsterdam to hear that they are sold out. And if you order using Apple’s web store or the Apple Store app, you’ll have to wait for two weeks before they even ship it!
